As a follow up to the message that went out via GradDiv to the faculty advisors earlier this week (see attachment 1, Grad Advisor Memo re ELPE and TA evals), I am writing to begin collecting appointment requests for this year’s TA English Language Evaluations. If you have done this coordination in past years, you have likely communicated with Josie Patterson. Due to recent changes to Josie’s role, I will be coordinating these exams in 2022.
As a reminder, Graduate Council policy "requires all prospective teaching assistants (TAs) whose first language is not English to take the TA Language Evaluation in order to be certified to hold sole classroom teaching or laboratory responsibilities."
This includes international student TAs with permanent resident status and international student TAs who have completed a degree from a US institution. Note: Although applicants are exempt from taking the TOEFL exam if they completed a degree from a US institution, this does not mean they are exempt from the required TA oral evaluation which is in preparation for their TAship certification.
Like last year, this year’s TA English language evaluations will be conducted on Zoom by default. (A limited number of in-person evaluation appointments will be available and will only be scheduled at the department’s request.)
We will again offer the two forms of TA evaluations, our standard exam and our screening exam (please see the attachment 2, ITA Screening Evaluation Memo, for additional details regarding student eligibility for the shorter screening evaluations).
For Fall 2022, TA English Language Exam appointments will be available on the following dates:
Wednesday, September 7, 2022: Screening evaluations only
Thursday, September 8, 2022: Screening and standard evaluations
Friday, September 9, 2022: Standard evaluations only
Monday, September 12, 2022: Standard evaluations only
