Graduate Testing Information & Dates

Graduate Testing Information

The English Language Placement Exam (ELPE) for graduate students is required of all incoming international students whose first language is other than English. Some international graduate students are exempt from this exam if the student has completed their entire undergraduate degree at an approved English medium institution. Exemptions are determined by the Graduate Division and are made available to the EMS Program by the middle of the summer.

Update for Fall 2020:

The EMS Program will be administering an online placement process for new international students beginning in August, 2020.  We will be providing detailed information in mid-September about the exact dates and how students will complete the placement process. This is free and is taken only once.

Prospective Teaching Assistants

TA English Language Evaluations are required of all international students whose home language is other than English who are offered a TAship for the first time. These evaluations are arranged for students at the request of the student’s home department.

For Fall 2020 - information for TA English Language Evaluations will be updated soon!

Please note – there are no exemptions to the TA English Language Evaluation.
